Von Willebrand disease is a genetic disorder that interferes with the ability of blood to clot. It is one of the commonest inherited bleeding disorders.

Here are the key features. Please check them out!

Symptoms: Include excessive bleeding from cuts, nosebleeds, and bleeding during menstruation.

Causes: Von Willebrand disease is caused by a defect in the gene that regulates the production of von Willebrand factor, a protein involved in the clotting process. When this gene is damaged or defective, the body can produce too little of this protein, which can cause clots to form in the circulation. Von Willebrand disease usually is inherited from one parent who has a genetic mutation. The disorder may also occur sporadically and develop at any age.

Diagnosis: Can be made through a blood test that measures the level of von Willebrand factor in the blood.

Treatment: Includes taking medication to increase the level of von Willebrand factor in the blood and using a bandage or compression stocking to help control bleeding.
