Euthyroid sick syndrome (ETS) is a condition that affects the thyroid gland, a small organ located in the neck. The thyroid gland helps control body temperature, growth and development, and energy metabolism. ETS occurs when the thyroid gland becomes damaged or doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone  secondary to non-thyroidal illness, e.g- pneumonia, starvation, septic shock, cancer, HIV, Inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune diseases

Symptoms of ETS can include weight gain, fatigue, bloating, anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating.

Lab Findings: Decreased T3, Normal to decreased T4, normal TSH and increased reverse T3

Treatment for ETS typically involves medications to increase thyroid hormone production and surgery to remove or repair the damaged thyroid gland.
