- It is a metabolic arthropathy due to deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPP) in connective tissue•
- Pathogenesis: There is CPP deposition in joints.
- Causes: aging and/or genetic factors, hemochromatosis, hyperparathyroidism, hypomagnesemia, ochronosis, Diabetes, joint trauma, surgery, and severe medical illness (these conditions can provoke an acute attack)
- Dx: Microscopy of synovial fluid- Rhomboid shape Calcium Pyrophosphate crystals!
- Treatment: NSAIDs, Treatment of underlying condition
